Last night I babysat for my friends’ kids so they could go to their son’s Back to School Night. On the ride home, my friend told me all about the Back to School Night and how the school has put in place this reward system that rewards good behavior. The kids get these cards each time they are caught doing good behavior. Each month the cards are tallied and winners get to do things like have a pizza party in the principal’s office or have high tea time in the principal’s office. The kids have been loving this system so much that the school has had to order more cards to keep up with the kids’ good behavior. It’s so strange to think when I was a kid in school, going to the principal’s office was a bad thing.
The concept made me think about Quest to Learn NYC. Quest to Learn is a special school that has centered all of its learning around games. The school allows kids to take on different Quests for roles like a scientist, historian, mathematician, or writer.
Games work as rule-based learning systems, creating worlds in which players actively participate, use strategic thinking to make choices, solve complex problems, seek content knowledge, receive constant feedback, and consider the point of view of others.
I think it is pretty amazing that education is moving in a direction that adapts with where we are at as a society. I am curious to see how creative and innovative kids of the future will be and can’t wait to see what they’ll bring to the world.
