2019: My Year in Review

It’s that time again – to reflect back on the year and cherish the moments that brought me the most joy, growth, success, and well, what didn’t go so well.

Joy

  • Our trip to Australia – We knew this would be the only time we’d ever make it and tackled a lot: Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road (MY DREAM CAME TRUE!!!), Adelaide, Kangaroo Island, Alice Springs to Uluru, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. I could do an entire post on our trip (and I should). It was amazing in every way. But, you know, there are little things I look back to that I LOVE the most, and they were definitely the moments with my spouse in the trip. Yes, I highly recommend going to see Australia. You will not regret it. There were many moments we found ourselves saying, “maybe we should move here”. (Though politically, we found we were a very sore match for Australia.)
  • Sunflower Trail Marathon – It is always a ton of fun to go out to Winthrop/Twisp/Mazama and the course was a lot easier than Sun Mountain 50K. Had an amazing weekend. Saw a bajillion sunflowers.
  • Camping at Alder Lake with Katie & friends
Hike near Alder Lakes
  • My Birthday – I took the day off for the first time in 8 years! And surprise: they had a trail race planned at Poo Poo Point in the middle of the week, called “Chircio Tenpeat”. I only did as many repeats as I wanted (it was my birthday, so I can do whatever I want. ;)) Then I got brunch and turned my backyard into an impromptu winery sunning myself with the cats. It was the perfect day.
  • The Enchantments – Did in 1 day, ~11-12 hours. Trip report here.
  • Time with Katie & Kaurine in Portland and Silver Falls State Park before the PNSQC conference
  • Estes Park, CO trip with my sister, nephew and parents – I want to go back! So does Gene.
  • Quick trip to see my parents & brother’s family in November
  • Chelan, Winthrop & Mazama Trip – Ski trip with my friends of 13-14 years, Forrest to celebrate his birthday this December.
  • Viking Disco with Carol, Eiko, Joe, Jason, etc.
  • Annual ice skating outing with SGLTG/SGLRG
  • Live Shows
  • Girl’s Weekend
  • Quite a few races, but one favourite was Fort Ebey Kettles Trail Race – I can never get enough of this race and Whidbey Island/Deception Pass!
  • Lauren’s Birthday Party on a pirate ship
  • Some awesome snowshoeing – one fav was definitely Hex Mountain
Hex Mountain Snowshoe unless I mixed this photo up with another hike which is very likely
  • Karaoke and catching up with my high school friend George
  • Pumpkin Picking, Corn Maze and other shenanigans
  • Run/Walk with Pride 2019
  • Fremont Summer Solstice Parade
  • 4th of July Splash n Dash
  • Gene’s sister Megan & James’ wedding ❤
  • Surprise Alpaca Birthday weekend at Whidbey Island for Tiffany
  • Wine Bike Ride with Svetlana and co-workers
Bikes, brunch, and wine!
  • Hikes knocked off my bucket list
  • Planting flowers with my mother-in-law and creating a giant sunflower lot (a little more permanent to keep the weeds out each year)
  • Annual Holiday cookie making party with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law
  • Gene & I finished are long-running marathon of re-watching Star Trek. Deep Space Nine is a close tie with Voyager and Next Generation in my book.
  • I read a lot of great books. I also bought a lot of books I still have to read. And I have a big list of books I want to read.
  • A lot of people listened to my radio show and Mixcloud this year. And I’m on a cadence of getting new music to play from local artists every week, which is amazing. I have been DJing for 19 years now and I’m still not tired of it.

I am probably missing many things. The year went by so quick and is so busy, but I loved so many moments of it. I cannot even find words to express how much I love life, and the people who are in it. I feel so very lucky to have the friends and family I do. ❤ ❤ ❤

Growth & Success

  • I got a promotion! Seen as a senior manager/leader in my organization. It took me over 10 years to become a manager, so it is nice to see this milestone come a little more timely (perhaps yet there is hope for women in management and IT?). It did follow applying for a Director role, which one day maybe I will get there.
  • Mended family relationships – Summary: I am stupidly stubborn. Lesson learned.
  • Presented on Leading Cultural Change A topic I’m becoming quite knowledgeable in, sharing years of experience.
  • Dealing with trauma – The work here never goes away. I’m finally able to talk about pieces of it that I’ve never been able to talk about before. That’s a very big step. Maybe I finally will be able to buy myself a keyboard or synthesizer and make music again. Here is to hoping.
  • I stuck with doing strength training 2-3 x per week in 2019, and Svetlana joined me in October at lunch time which was a lot of fun!
  • I did drop ~10 lbs that I did not need.

What Didn’t Go Well

  • Injuries – I set out to train for my 2nd 50 Miler. In May, I tore my chest wall muscles and broke a rib after running Rattlesnake Mountain with my friend Carol. I still managed to run the Sunflower Trail Marathon a week later. Yes, it did hurt. In June, I got stitches in my knee after falling into a rock trail running at Snow Lake. 3 weeks after having my stitches out, I still managed to hike/run the Enchantments. So there was a silver lining. But, I wasn’t able to run White River 50 M.
  • Our cat Zas had 7 teeth pulled (he had an infection and was having issues breathing). He recovered well and is doing great. But, we really need to take them into the vet more. We also need a vet that doesn’t prescribe dog medicine and doesn’t seem to know what they are doing at all.
  • Friends moving out-of-state – Miss them dearly
  • Noche passed away – At the start of the year, my in-laws cat Noche died after a freak accident. He and Sankja were originally Gene’s cats. We held a memorial for him in the yard. But, it was so sad.
  • I got stung by bees twice this year – I’m severely allergic, but I survived, and that is the partie très importante. Now I own 2 EpiPens. If only I can remember to take them everywhere.
  • Dealing with loss and loved ones in the hospital
  • DIY Holiday Fair didn’t happen! 😦
  • KonMari – I did this sort of, and then never took the boxes to Goodwill…
  • Also didn’t paint any of the walls in the house per annual goals, oops. Maybe this year?

Trip Report: The Enchantments

Yesterday, I was supposed to be running my 2nd 50 Miler at White River (Crystal Mountain). Facing two separate injuries during my training, I was forced to drop that plan. But, I had always wanted to do the Enchantments. I got my stitches out of my knee ~3 weeks ago, and was able to quickly come back. One of my friends messaged me earlier in the week that they were planning to do the Enchantments Saturday. Was I in? Yes! Let’s do it.

My friends are slower, so we discussed two of us would leave our cars at the finish at Snow Lakes Trailhead, then I wouldn’t have to wait for them when I finished earlier. We discussed that they could always turn back at Aasgard if it was too difficult, or they could always stay through the night in their puffer jackets worse-case scenario. We all had headlamps and extra light.

We stayed the night before at the Bavarian Ritz Hotel in Leavenworth, a quick 11 min drive from the Snow Lakes Trailhead. I was out like the dead by 9:30 pm. We wanted to get an early start, but someone took a lot longer than planned. We got to starting at the trailhead at 6:51 am.

I stayed the first 3 miles with my friends, but it took them ~2.5-3 hours just to do those first 3, so I decided it was time to push ahead. At the overlook of Colchuck Lake, I ended up introducing myself to a group of girls who were shooting to finish around the same time as me, 5 pm – 7 pm. I ended up running with them later.

I got to the ascent at Asgaard pass around 9:30-10 am. A quarter of the way up, I refilled my Camelbak at a waterfall stream. A little over half way up, I was out of steam, and needed to stop for lunch. It was sunny, but once you stop, you realize how cold and windy it is. It took me 40 min to scarf down a tuna sandwhich for some reason. Then I felt like I had plenty of energy to carry on.

On the way up from Colchuck Lake to Aasgard Pass

Towards the top of Aasgard Pass, there were cairns to the left and cairns to the right. I ended up following everyone going to the right. This woman in sandals with her hiking partner commented she thinks we went the wrong or more indirect way. I wondered the same, but at this point we were so close to the top, we decided to continue.

Little Annapurna
The Enchantments

The Enchantments at the top of Aasgard are unworldly beautiful. I saw so many mountain goats and Little Annapurna peak. This section of the hike is the most pleasant, but I kept trucking along except to refill my Camelbak about half way through the Enchantments section. Here I met up with a few women hiking together. I was about 6 hours in. They seemed worried I was alone, so I explained my friends are just slower and both ours cars were parked at the trailhead since I was most likely to finish first. They ended up learning I’m used to running ultras, and was supposed to be running a 50 miler today. They offered to take a photo of me. After awhile I pushed on again. But, this entire day, I really welcomed all the lovely interactions I had with strangers along the way.

Fun snow slide I think down to Leprechaun Lake?

Going through the Enchantments and past Tranquil, Isolation, Inspiration, Perfection, Leprechaun, and Vivian Lakes, other than Colchuck Lake, were my most favourite parts of the hike. Here I was with multiple groups of people piggybacking all the way down to the descent to Snow Lakes Trailhead.

The 7,000 ft descent down the Snow Lakes Trailhead was by far my least favourite part of the thru-hike. If I were to ever do this again, I think I’d just hike up Colchuck, Aasgard Pass, and the Enchantments and turn around. Come to think of it, while heading up Aasgard, I met several trail runners/hikers who were doing this who made the comment to me – “You guys are all in for a very long day.” Now I know exactly what they meant.

Before Nadas Lake view, a whole bunch of us took the wrong way down a very steep descent to the Snow Lakes Trail. It was not easy on anyone’s knees.

Snow Lakes – Upper Snow Lake

At Snow Lakes, I ran into 3 women backpackers who said they had been hiking since 9 am to get to Snow Lakes from the Snow Lakes Trailhead, and thought it had been 9 miles. My watch had me at 16 miles at this point. I thought, “This was supposed to be a 17.5 – 18.5 mile trip. What the hell!?” It was now turning into a 25 mile hike. I bumped into and piggybacked the trail with a group of guys who said they were only at 12 miles. I wondered if maybe taking the right instead of left at Aasgard somehow added 4 miles to my trip. I started running because although I was prepared for the dark, I had no desire at all to be stuck out there in the dark. A few girls I descended that wrong turn with, caught up with me and started run/hiking too.

Nada Lake on part of the descent to Snow Lakes Trailhead

For awhile I was alone on the Snow Lakes Trailhead descent. The wind was blowing and sounded very eerie. I kept pushing to descend faster, not wanting to be out there at night. My legs still felt pretty good. Here two more groups of people, including the girls I was with at mile ~6 at the top of Colchuck Lake, and a few people I had seen on other parts of the trail, started running with me, and said I inspired them to run. It was nice to have the company for a while on that brutal descent, but they passed me about 2 miles from the end. I kept checking my map, noticed I had signal and a message from my husband checking in on me, when I’d be home and if I wanted something warm for dinner (Yes, please!). I estimated maybe I had a mile and a half. It turned out to be 5 more miles. Those last 1.5 miles, I just wanted it to be over. My legs finally were tired. I finished at 6:40 pm, for almost 12 hours total.

Stats:

First 21.20 miles: Strava; last 2.72 miles: MapMyRun

It was a total of ~25 miles between my Garmin (which died at mile 21) and MapMyRun on my phone. It took me 11 hours 49 min total.

My packing list

I went with running trail running sneakers instead of hiking boots. I think this was the right call for me. I do not do well with hiking boots on long descents like that; my toes just get mashed. And it was nice to have the flexibility to run, plus my trail runners grip better on gravel and rock than my boots. I did bring an extra pair of socks. After stepping into a stream by accident, I did change them at mile 18 and my feet were very happy about this.

Definitely used my poles way more than normal. Even used my Yaktrax (though only threw 1 on to easily put on/off) on a couple slippery snow areas.
